Many clinically relevant questions and problems are based on processes, which are initiated and maintained by the immune system (e.g. autoimmunity, organ transplantation, tumor immunology, immunology of infection). In order to improve the understanding of both the physiology and pathophysiology of the immune system, it is indispensable to elucidate the molecular mechanisms, which initiate, maintain and terminate an immune response. Knowledge of the underlying mechanisms is the key for developing better therapeutic options for disorders of the immune system.

Research at the IMKI is structured into several key research areas that are analysed by our prinicipal investigators and their groups. Our research activities are supported by key technologies, such as specialised imaging methods. Furthermore, our institute is part of several collaborative research initiatives, which strengthen our profile as a hub of molecular analysis of signalling pathways and cell communication of the immune system.
